Another attempt to cross the border illegally was done by more Cambodians who are trying to make ends meet.
In order to strengthen border security and reduce illegal border attempts, the 513th Infantry Force of Banteay Meanchey Province implemented 24-hour patrol and guard duties. Soldiers from the infantry takes shifts to ensure that security along the border is maintained.
On the night of October 13, troops stationed at the border apprehended a group of Cambodians who were making their way across the Cambodian-Thai border. They apprehended at Seila Khmer Village, O’Bei Choan Commune, O’Chrov District, Banteay Meanchey.
The group was made up of 37 people, including 18 females. The group was detained then handed over to relevant forces for legal processing.
The number of Cambodians who have attempted to cross the border into Thailand to look for work have not decreased in spite of the pandemic. Battambang border police reported that over the span of three days, they arrested more than 130 Cambodians who attempted to cross the border.
While a number of Cambodians try to cross the border into Thailand, others are scrambling for help from the Cambodian Government to get them out of Thailand. Thailand has been one of the most hard-hit countries in Southeast Asia by the pandemic. Many Cambodians have lost their jobs in the country and are left stranded.
